Clitheroe Royal Grammar School

The Royal Grammar School was founded in 1554 as a school to educate boys. The Girls’ Grammar School was established in 1958, and in 1985 the two schools were amalgamated to form a selective mixed 11-18 school. On 1st September 1991, the school became grant maintained, receiving its funding directly from the DfEE. In September 1999 the school became a Foundation School within the local education authority of Lancashire.

As a result of our Ofsted inspection in January 1997, the school was included in the Chief Inspector’s Annual Report in 1998 and was named as an “Outstanding School” and in May 1999 it was awarded the status of a Beacon School. In March, 2002, following a further Ofsted inspection, the school was described as an “excellent school” with the leadership of the Head being defined as “outstanding”.

We have a large and thriving Sixth Form Centre with an outstanding record of academic success and we offer 27 different courses. Psychology is the most popular single subject at A level, and next year almost half of the sixth form will be studying it. There will be four teachers running the course, which is AQA specification A.

Julie Bostock: Head of Psychology

Julie Bostock has been teaching A level Psychology for 14 years, firstly at Bacup & Rawtenstall Grammar School, and currently at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School. She has a degree in Psychology from Birmingham University and is a member of the British Psychological Society. Julie gained a PGCE in Secondary Science from the Open University, although Psychology is now so popular that she doesn’t get the opportunity to teach science anymore. Julie is not only the Head of Psychology, but she is also a Senior Tutor, which means that she has pastoral responsibility for 60 students, whom she helps with their university applications, which cover all subjects and not just Psychology.
